Academic Intervention

Our academic intervention services provide explicit, systematic instruction for students who need additional support in reading, spelling, writing, mathematics, or related foundational skills. Instruction is individualized based on each student's current skill level, evaluation results, and ongoing progress.

Reading and writing language intervention may address:

  • Phonological and phonemic awareness
  • Sound-symbol correspondence
  • Decoding and word recognition
  • Encoding and spelling
  • Reading accuracy and automaticity
  • Oral reading fluency
  • Written expression
  • Handwriting and transcription skills
  • Vocabulary and language skills that support reading and writing

Math intervention may address:

  • Number sense and quantity
  • Counting and cardinality
  • Place value
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division concepts
  • Math fact fluency and efficient calculation strategies
  • Understanding mathematical symbols and vocabulary
  • Fractions and other foundational concepts
  • Word-problem comprehension and problem solving
  • Selecting and applying appropriate strategies
  • Organizing mathematical work and explaining mathematical thinking

Math intervention focuses on developing conceptual understanding alongside procedural fluency. Rather than relying on memorization alone, students are taught to understand how numbers relate, why strategies work, and how to apply those strategies across different types of problems.

Intervention is designed to protect against the loss of confidence and self-esteem that can develop when a child repeatedly struggles in school. Ideally, we develop a plan that provides intervention support during your child's school day. At Bearings, we believe in the whole child, including opportunities and access to after-school activities, sports participation, and weekend freedoms for all children. If allowable, we will coordinate with your child's school support team to provide intervention at the school site. Bearings Intervention will help your child become a confident, capable, and joyful learner who understands how they learn, has the skills to meet increasing academic demands, and can approach challenging work with a growing sense of independence.

What to Expect

Academic intervention at The Bearings Collective is highly individualized and designed around each child's specific learning profile, strengths, and areas of need. Before instruction begins, we review available evaluations, school data, previous intervention records, and complete a detailed intake interview. Additional skill-based assessments may be used to identify where instruction should begin.

Weekly Sessions

Intervention is typically recommended at least three times per week to provide the consistency and repetition needed for meaningful growth, though some students may benefit from greater intensity based on their individual needs. Sessions typically run for one hour and use evidence-based practices to provide explicit, targeted instruction.

Instruction follows a carefully planned sequence while remaining responsive to the student. Previously taught skills are reviewed regularly, new concepts are taught explicitly, and students are given repeated opportunities to apply what they have learned. Progress is monitored throughout intervention so that instruction, pacing, and intensity can be adjusted based on student performance rather than simply moving through a program because a lesson has been completed.
